A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing these medications must be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to original weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
The team point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
